OUR SMALL HERD

Our original four boys came from Ardo Alpacas in Aberdeenshire. We are not alpaca breeders and have our boys purely as pets. Our experience is that you don't need to be a breeder and that a 'batchelor herd' can give much pleasure to the owner. We have 5 acres including our big garden and grazing for the boys, 15 miles north of Inverness, Scotland. I spin, knit, felt and crochet with the fleece from the boys.

Right hand down a bit!

Something of interest is happening here. (L to R) Faro, Fergus, Fyta, Gully, Gaucho and Fidget can't believe their eyes..........

Yep, it's Mum vandalising the buttercups again - right hand down a bit!   The buttercups are now becoming a real menace by encroaching on all the grass so we are about to get soil tests done and take action to get rid of them.  We will avoid herbicides if we can.  An application of lime will help - anybody got any ideas for getting rid of buttercups?   We had a Countax sit-on mower for many years but the paddocks were just too much for it so the new Iseki is now doing the business.  Note the mid-summer clothing to keep out the cold wind!

Front to back, Gully, Gaucho and Fidget charge through the gate to look at the freshly mown paddock.

And finally.................when Robbie was about to put dung on the garden, he lifted the polythene cover and look what was underneath!  I hope they will decide to go away of their own accord before drastic action is taken to move them - permanently!

  1. Love the fantastic new tractor, R & S. I see the rabbits are still to the fore; you could do with help from another Oscar! Joyce.

  3. Hi Joyce, Yes, come back Oscar or Flo-Jo, they could both handle the rabbits. Pansy is more of a mouser -but that helps too.
Hi Jayne, If it's not buttercups clogging the grass it's rabbits eating the greens. Life's wee problems!
Take care both. shirley & Robbie

  5. Hi Barbara, Sun on my head would be a good thing! The weather just can't make up it's mind what season it's supposed to be at present but the coming week looks hopeful. After all the rain we've had the grass and weeds will now start to shoot up. Take care. Shirley

  6. Wow! what a nice fancy new mower you've got there! Seems like the boys were all checking it out. They notice the smallest thing that is different! I take it, your not fond of the bunnies. Why? because they eat the clover? Weird how they all gathered in one spot. Are they babies? They look small. Hard to believe you are still cold. Do you ever get warm weather there??? ...debbie

  7. Hi Debbie, Yes these are small bunnies. Don't mind them eating clover but unfortunately they find their way under/over/through fencing and if they get into the veg garden they ruin it. We do get warm weather here - usually mid June, on a Wed afternoon between 2.00 - 4.00pm!! The UK is in the middle of an unsettled spell of weather at present - it'll get better. Shirley.
